Thai police revealed the tourists were attacked on Saturday on the
remote island of Koh Kut, also known as Koh Kood, on the maritime border
with Cambodia.
The area is known for its wild jungle and beautiful beaches.
According to Thai police, the attackers assaulted four people, including two women who were raped at knifepoint, after swimming from their fishing boat.
The women's injured male companions managed to raise the alarm.
The fishermen were caught while trying to escape and reportedly confessed to the Cambodian ambassador to Thailand.
"During the interview with the Cambodian ambassador the five fishermen confessed to have really been involved in the cases of rape and assault," the Cambodian ministry said in a statement.
"It happened while the five fishermen were in a drunk state."
The fishermen have been charged with rape and violent assault.
